COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT
WHAT IS COMPREHENSIBLE input?
The method I use in class is commonly referred to as the "Comprehensible Input" Method.
In a Comprehensible Input classroom, the main goal is communication rather than perfect accuracy. Students are encouraged to listen and read a lot before being expected to speak or write extensively.
When using Comprehensible Input techniques, teachers use gestures, images, stories, context, repetition, and familiar topics to make the language understandable, allowing students to naturally build their understanding over time.
Because the focus is on understanding rather than performance, there’s no pressure to be perfect. You can relax, enjoy the process, and build confidence at your own pace.
The goal is not just to “learn” Spanish, but to truly acquire it, so that you can use it comfortably and confidently in real-life situations.
Just as children acquire their first language through understanding messages around them, language learners develop fluency by receiving large amounts of understandable input. As their comprehension grows, speaking, reading, and writing emerge more naturally and with greater confidence.
